The King's official residence in Scotland, at the foot of the Royal Mile. The State Apartments, Mary Queen of Scots' chambers and the ruined abbey make it a good rainy-day choice, and the family trail keeps younger visitors interested.

Opening hours change through the year and the palace closes for some royal events, so check the website before you travel. Café and shop on site; largely accessible.
